Role:
We’re looking for a Medical Research Assistant to join our rapidly growing consumer health tech startup on the Clinical Content team. This role will support our marketing and content teams by identifying, analyzing, and translating scientific research that meets Function’s rigorous clinical standards. This role is ideal for someone with a background in health sciences or biomedical research who is deeply familiar with the principles of evidence-based medicine and skilled in distilling complex findings into usable formats for marketing assets. We are eager to work with someone who has the ability to navigate peer-reviewed literature, apply critical thinking, and uphold scientific integrity when supporting the development of consumer-friendly content. Key Responsibilities:
- Literature review execution: Conduct in-depth literature reviews to locate high-quality evidence aligned with Function’s editorial and clinical standards, prioritizing:
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
- Large randomized controlled trials (RCTs)
- Current clinical guidelines from major medical societies (e.g., AMA, NIH, AHA, ACOG)
- Observational studies or narrative reviews, when higher-level evidence is unavailable
- Evidence assessment: Evaluate strength of evidence using established research hierarchies (e.g., GRADE, NIH study types).
- Cross-functional collaboration: Support copywriters, medical editors, and marketing leads with well-sourced summaries, citations, and scientific context to ensure clinical rigor across marketing assets (social media posts, podcast scripts, and more)
- Research organization: Annotate, organize, and maintain a structured research archive by biomarker, condition, or content type.
- Content validation: Fact-check claims in draft content to ensure consistency with primary literature and Function’s evolving standards of accuracy.
- Preclinical evidence evaluation: Ensure that animal, in vitro, and in vivo studies are critically evaluated for scientific validity and are ethically and accurately represented in all communications.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Educational foundation: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, Health Policy, or similar)
- Research environment experience: 3-5 years of experience in a health-related research environment (e.g., academic lab, research institute, clinical support role)
- AI tool familiarity: Comfortable with AI tools like Consensus and Perplexity
- Database navigation: Comfortable navigating PubMed, Cochrane, NIH databases, and similar tools
- Evidence-based medicine knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of evidence-based medicine, including how to differentiate levels and quality of evidence
- Study interpretation skills: Strong ability to interpret clinical studies and summarize complex findings accurately
- Organizational strength: Highly organized with a track record of documentation precision and information hygiene
Nice-to-Have Skills and Experiences:
- Experience supporting marketing, communications, or editorial teams within a healthcare or wellness company
- Familiarity with medical style guides and structured referencing systems (e.g., AMA, APA)
- Interest or background in functional or preventive medicine
- Ability to collaborate across disciplines (e.g., medical writers, creatives, clinicians)
